2009/10 Season NEWS

Under 10’s at the Twickenham 7’s Festival: 25.04.2010

G V Ealing 9 – 0
G v Twickenham 2 – 2
G v Brighton 1 – 4

3rd in Pool.....Won 1, Drew 1, Lost 1

Started well against Ealing, hitting them with strong tackles; ripping the ball from them; passing the ball wide and keeping the game flowing with very few mauls or scrums it was a delight to watch. A great flying start although Ealing coach did confirm that they had put forward a C team into the competition and thanked me for taking Rory & Stephen off at half time 7 - 0. Well done to Finlay who ran in the other 2 tries.

Twickenham was tough game with some very big boys to tackle, but we held our own and played 90% of the 1st half in their half of the pitch, but it was not as fluid as the game against Ealing and Twickenham defence was strong; just before half time, Twickenham made a break from their own try line and down the wing, very much against the run of play. 2nd half we bounced back and passed the ball better keeping the game flowing and managed to run in 2 tries to take the lead 2-1. Twickenham put forward their big forwards and tried maul & bulldoze their way through slowing the game down but we held our own but unfortunately in the last play of the game they scored in the corner....I was on the touchline and I thought Stephen had done enough the drive Twickenham player into touch with his leg lying over the touchline but the Ref (Brighton) asked the Twickenham Parents and they called it good!

Brighton had lost to Twickenham and both teams needed the win to proceed to the Semi Final. We started well just like the 1st game, closed down Brighton and put the big tackles in, ripped the ball and tried to keep the ball moving; we unfortunately made more mistakes with knock-ons than in earlier games, which slowed the game down. Stephen was injured early in the 1st half with an stamp on his leg and was carried off the pitch. The team held their own but with Rory (sore neck) and Stephen off the pitch the tackling and ripping was not as effective as the earlier games. Half time 2-1, but it was not over, Rory was ready to get stuck in and Stephen had walked off his leg injury. We looked like we had a chance and Stephen made some good runs breaking away from the mauls, but we lacked the supporting play, everyone looked a little tired and then disaster Stephen was hit in the face by an elbow in his eye and unable to continue, Emily, Connor, Joseph, Finlay all tried to penetrate the Brighton defence with their evasive runs but just lacked that the extra strength to break the tackles; Rory & Tiago tried to break through but were blocked and the game slowed down. Brighton retained possession for much of the game, smuggling the ball from the mauls, passing down the line. We did well to keep the tackles going in but Brighton were relentless and retained possession with phase after phase leading to 2 more tries.

It just wasn’t our day.

Congratulations to everyone who played you showed true grit and displayed excellent behaviour in winning and losing : Tiago / Stephen / Rory / Aaron / Caleb / Joseph / Emily / Thomas / Connor / Caleb / Finlay

You were all by far the best team to watch playing on the day regardless of whether you won, drew or lost.

Well Done!
