Match Report: Grasshoppers v London Irish II

Seniors: First XV: 12th August 2017

Grasshoppers 54 20 London Irish II
Grasshoppers welcomed London Irish 2nd XV to MacFarlane Lane in the first of four pre-season friendlies before the season starts in September. Both clubs assembled squads of 25 and agreed to play 4 sessions of 20 minutes. What a start we had..... From the kickoff Gs skipper Callum McCormack gathered and after a couple of quick phases the ball was moved across the back line for youngster Lewis Graham to score under the posts. Debutant flyhalf Ben Hawkins kicked the 2 points. Once again from the Irish kickoff, Grasshoppers secured the ball and played several phases before moving the ball wide and then shifting the ball back inside for McCormack to score. The conversion was missed but Hoppers found themselves leading 12-0 after 5 sparkling minutes. The two early tries conceded by Irish kick started their revival and they then went about taking the game to Hoppers through their powerful forwards with some close quarter driving play that took them deep into the Gs 22. Grasshoppers defended stoutly and managed to exit their own line. After 16 minutes following a series of forward drives No 8 James Kent went over for an unconverted try only for Irish to kick a penalty from the 22 to make the score 19-3 after 20 minutes. Both sides made wholesale changes and for the next 40 minutes the game became much more frantic with the physicality increasing and the referee having several chats with both captains in an attempt to keep a lid on things. During the next 10 minutes, Irish scored two tries, one of which was converted and Gs knew they were in a tussle. On 57 minutes and after a concerted effort of phases, Hoppers scored their fourth try through U20 lock John Jude, converted by fellow U20 Celton De Brito-Lobato to make the score 26-15 with 23 minutes left on the clock. Into the final 20 minutes Hoppers cruised into overdrive scoring two converted tries through centre Mark Cunningham and prop Josh Harpur to move the score to 40-15. This positivity from the home side was quickly rebuked by Irish as they fought themselves into the Gs 22 to score an unconverted try out wide. However it was Gs who had the last say by running in 2 converted tries by centre Louis Brown and a second for Harpur to win 54-20.
