Match Report: Grasshoppers v Weybridge Vandals

Seniors: First XV: 19th August 2017

Grasshoppers 40 31 Weybridge Vandals
Grasshoppers welcomed Weybridge Vandals to MacFarlane Lane in the second of their trial games following a great performance against London Irish 2nd XV last week. The game consisted of four 20 minute sessions with both sets of coaches coming to terms with what their best XVs are by the first league games on 9th September. The first session was all square 7-7 with Josh Harper who was operating at prop went over and stand-off Conor Gilmore adding the conversion. Gs continued to press but it was the visitors who drew level with a converted try of their own. The next session saw a number of changes for both sides with Weybridge opening the scoring with an unconverted try shortly followed by a try from centre, Mark Cunningham converted by fellow centre and backs coach, Craig Foster to retake the lead 14-12. The final play of the session saw winger, Ahmed Abdali collect the ball in space forty metres out evaded the defence and went over for a well taken try. Craig Foster made the conversion to make the final score for this session 21-12. Session three proved to be the most competitive of the four and saw the visitors take control as they came back with two converted tries to take the lead 21-26 but this was short lived as new prop Andre James drove over for a magnificent try to make it 26-26 and the Craig Foster conversion put Gs back in the lead 28-26. The fourth session was nip and tuck as Josh Harper bludgeoned his way across the line for an unconverted try but back came Weybridge with an unconverted try of their own to make it a nail-biting 33-31. The final try of the day went to Josh Harper and the Craig Foster conversion made the final score 40-31 and whilst Josh Harper picked up the player of the day Coach, Greg Joll was keen to point out that there were some stand out performances from winger, Ahmed Abdali and Prop Andre James. He went on to day that he was very happy with the whole performance and is looking forward to playing Stevenage at home on 9th September when well be celebrating 30 years at MacFarlane Lane.
