Match Report: Grasshoppers v Teddington I

Seniors: First XV: 2nd September 2017

Grasshoppers 41 36 Teddington I
Grasshoppers welcomed Teddington first and second teams to MacFarlane Lane for this, the last of the pre-season trials, ahead of their first league game of the season at home to Stevenage next week. Teddington kicked off up the slope on a glorious afternoon and after twenty minutes Gs had had most of the game but it was the visitors who broke the deadlock with a converted try after some indifferent tackling from Gs. This was shortly followed by a send unconverted try for the visitors to make it 0-12. Gs came back though with two unconverted tries through prop, Andre James and winger, Harry Hancock to narrow the gap to two points which would have been a reasonable score to go into the break with but alas the visitors took advantage of more sloppy defence and made the half time score 10-19 with a converted try. The start of the second half didnt go to plan for Gs as Teddington took control and moved further ahead with an unconverted push-over try from a five-metre lineout, followed shortly by a converted try to move the score to 10-31. Gs though got themselves back into the game as they opted to throw the ball around and they saw the score narrowed to nine points at 22-31 through tries from number eight and skipper, Callum McCormack and flanker, Yung Long-Yuk and one conversion from stand-off, Conor Gilmore. Things looked promising but sloppy defence once again allowed the visitors to push the gap back to fourteen points 22-36 through an unconverted try. Gs though found fresh impetus and started to take control of the game which brought a try from second row, Jacob Kial and a second try from Yung Long-Yuk to make the score 32-36 with the Conor Gilmore conversion making it 34-36. Gs continued to press and some inspirational inter-passing saw centre, Louis Brown evade the visitors defence to slip in under the posts and the Conor Gilmore conversion confirmed the victory at 41-36. Gs second team had an equally inspiring win which didnt look possible after thirty minutes when they were 0-19 down. However back they came to take the game 39-24. Next week Gs are at home to Stevenage in the League 3pm kick off. This game also marks thirty seasons at MacFarlane Lane and the sad passing of Club stalwart in 1987 of Paul Read with both being remembered at a pre-match lunch.
