Match Report: Grasshoppers v Cheshunt

Seniors: First XV: 23rd September 2017

Grasshoppers 40 15 Cheshunt
Grasshoppers welcomed Cheshunt to MacFarlane Lane on a glorious late summer afternoon looking to get some genuine momentum into their season. The visitors were equally ambitious and kicked off up the slope and thanks to early indiscipline, Gs saw themselves 0-5 down after a push over try but this could have been much worse. However, Gs did eventually get themselves into gear and came back with some magnificent forward drives especially from props, Josh Harper and Andre James and second row, Yacob Kial. This allowed Gs backs some rom which was exploited magnificently by centre, Mark Cunningham who sent a long pass to winger, Tom OHalloran who went over for an unconverted try to level the scores. Cheshunt though, came back with another unconverted try to retake the lead 5-10 which put on hold any Gs resurgence. Then just before half time a quickly taken penalty sent hooker, Jack Walkden in for an unconverted try to make the half time score 10-10. Gs started the second half well and started to move the score board initially thanks to two penalties from stand-off, Conor Gilmore and then a try from scrum half, Ben Hawkins and with the Conor Gilmore conversion Gs saw themselves 23-10 ahead. All looked well when Conor Gilmore added a third penalty but Gs took their foot of the gas and back came the visitors with a third try, the second from a scrum pushover to make Gs feel nervous. Gs though took control in the last quarter of the game as they set their sights on the fourth bonus point try which eventually came thanks to centre, Louis Brown who forced his way over and the Conor Gilmore conversion moved the score onto 33-15. Gs continued to press and winger, George Stanton was rewarded with a try for his continual aggression throughout the game and the Conor Gilmore conversion made the final score 40-15.
