Match Report: Verulamian v Grasshoppers

Seniors: First XV: 30th September 2017

Verulamian 52 18 Grasshoppers
Grasshoppers travelled to St Albans to play Old Verulamiums who had retuned this year to the London Leagues after a few years absence. The question on everyones mind was; can they continue their great start to the season and would Gs be able to do that? Gs started the game the better with plenty of pressure and scoring opportunities and after ten minutes they saw themselves 0-6 ahead thanks to two penalties from stand-off, Conor Gilmore. However, the home side got themselves into the game with a well taken try that carved the Gs defense in two and got them the lead 7-6 with a converted try. Whilst Gs did have chances in the first half they failed to convert them and so the home side showed their pedigree and cruised ahead with three tries and two conversions and with a penalty on half time it made the score 22-6. Gs started the second half well but couldnt stop the home sides backs making ground when in possession and so it was they who scored the first points of the second half with a converted try to make it 29-6. Gs did gain some momentum which saw prop, Aaron Sheehan drive over for a try which when converted saw Gs close the gap to 29-13. However, this proved to be a small punctuation mark in the home sides ability to pick Gs defensive lock and so Gs soon found themselves 47-13 behind thanks to three unconverted tries and a penalty. Back came Gs though with a well taken unconverted try from full back, Harry Hancock to bring Gs tally to 47-18. However, the final word went to the home side at Gs tried to force the game and let in one final unconverted try to make the final score 52-18.
